The History of Wedding Almonds
Wedding almonds first made their appearance in the 15th Century in Europe. This was when sugar canes were first discovered and used to create hard candy coatings on nuts - especially almonds. Jordan almonds were traditionally served with honey-coated nuts and seeds after births and at weddings.
In Italy, only five almonds are served to guests as a way to symbolize the five pillars of a successful marriage for the couple:
Five sugared almonds for each guest to eat
To remind us that life is both bitter and sweet.
Five wishes for the new husband and wife --
Health, wealth, happiness, children, and a long life!
Wedding almonds are also used in Middle Eastern cultures as aphrodisiacs - which are why they're kept on hand at weddings for the newlyweds (and guests).
Make a Statement with Your Wedding Almonds
Keep the tradition of wedding almonds alive by serving up a small cluster (of five or more) in a tulle tied bag. You can pack them into tiny boxes or even just put them in your candy buffet.
Got a certain wedding color in mind? Fredlyn Nut Co. offers blue, white, and pink, as well as mixed colors. Or make your own color combination!
